Plant identification?

AdelheidisAdelheidis Posts: 10
Weather improving so it’s out into our new garden to start to fully understanding what is there. We have this lovely bush, leaves that look like miniature holly leaves, full of buds and is just coming into a beautiful orange flower. I cannot identify this plant, can anyone help? Thank you.

I think it is Berberis, but I am by no means an expert so happy to be corrected. also no idea of variety.

Not everyone likes the smell of the flowers. It can get unruly , if cut back to a foot tall it will soon regrow. This can be done in early spring as it is tough and spikes are difficult to deal with. Flowers will be sacrificed but needs to be carried out before birds build their nests.

I’ve just trimmed mine back a bit. Do be careful with the cuttings, not only can the spikes go straight through gloves, but they are sharp enough to get stuck in wellies and through the soles of trainers! I checked carefully for any birds nests first. At the end of last season, I spotted a beautiful little nest hidden inside the bush, teardrop shaped with a small entrance in the side. Don’t know who had built and used it.

A great shrub for the little brown birds … dunnocks, robins etc … pretty safe from cats squirrels and sparrow hawks because of the spiny berberis. 😃
