Grape & Fig - against wall

Hi All,
I've been reading advice about growing grapevine and fig up walls using horizontal wires. Recommendation is to leave a 4"/100cm gap behind the wires for ventilation and to avoid rubbing. The trouble is I can't find vine eyes that when drilled/screwed in well are that long! I emailed a specialist supplier and he drew a blank too. I don't want to have to fix a batten for extra depth as it wouldn't look that great. Do those with experience think there's another way? Or is 4"/100mm a bit excessive anyway?
My aim by the way is to rod and spur the vine with a couple of cordons from a single vine. The fig in a different wall section will probably be fan trained.
Thanks in advance for any help with this.
David
