Lawn Care with poor drainage -Help!!

I must admit, I haven’t ventured out much into the far side of the garden over the winter period. However last week I went to check how the rose bushes have coped over the winter. All along my raised player is like bog and no grass with patches of puddles. It’s clear there is no drainage in this garden which is expected as a new build and the laziness of current large building companies!

I should add the builders probably didn’t put much too soil down and as I found out when building my decking the ground is thick clay.

is there anything that can be done to fix this as I really don’t want artificial turf for wildlife reasons. The other option I was thinking was to dig a pond along the front of the planter.
Any suggestions would be amazing.

These photos don’t look bad but it’s telling me the other are too large to upload! There is standing water that has been there a while I’d imagine and anywhere I step just turns to mud and water seeps up from the ground.

Thanks so much!

  • It depends where you live @alexander.wade, but with clay soil and all the water that came down this winter, there isn’t much that you can do with drainage. The water has simply no space to go down as everything is full. A five liter rain stands in my garden for several hours and digging just a spate deep, I hit a standing water.
The good news with clay and lawn is that it will stay green over the summer.

    I my garden.

Have you ever dug down to see what is below. I have a new build saturated clay. However one and a half spades down a 'pan' that is dry. I am having to break it up all over the garden as it will never drain.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

Guess the best bet is to wait it out then! Thanks!

when I built my decking I had to dig 35 holes several feet deep! Thick sticky clay all the way along with all the bricks/wood they left behind!
