New English laurel what's happened???

Hi I planted an English laurel hedge in July 2023 they were all lovely and green now they look terrible all the new growth is pale and full of holes any help most apreciated thanks

    I don’t think you’ve a lot to be worried about there … young Laurel leaves are always paler and darken as they age, and a bit of mollusc damage is inevitable… all part of the natural world … nothing remains perfect for long. 
    I would clear the grass from a wider area along the hedge … that’ll help deter slugs and snails.

    I agree - the biggest problem there is that there needs to be a proper, clear space for them. Cuts down on the competition for moisture. The border is very narrow too, and if there's planting on the other side of the fence, that will have an effect. Laurel can take a little while to establish, and those won't be well established yet,  and it does benefit from a decent soil and plenty of moisture, but once established, it grows very easily - too easily if you have the conditions that suit  it  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
