Ceanothus in trouble!

Hello, I am wondering how to help one of my loved ceanothus shrubs that I planted 20 years ago. It has always had a mass of green foliage but has now become sparse since Autumn last year. I am hoping for Spring growth but it looks in need of some additional help. My other ceanothus are looking good planted 18 years ago. Thank you for any advice🙂

I suspect it is coming to the end of its life. They are not renowned for being long lived.

Sounds the most likely reason - quite common for them to fail after a decade or two.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you for your help. I did wonder if it was that, but was hoping for a miracle cure. Thankyou xx

Twenty yrs sounds impressive.  👍  I think a decade is more the norm.

I didn’t realise that. My other ceanothus are 18 years old and doing very well, already an abundance of buds which this one sadly has not. It’s right by my front door which I love in the Spring. I have only just accepted that I am going to have to cut it down😭I have been talking to it this afternoon willing it to live on! It has done very well then. I was worried I had not done something for it

It always feels sad to take out a plant.  Gardening can feel quite brutal at times.  But if it had 20 yrs, it must have been more than happy with the conditions you provided.  🙂
