Conifer Identification

Hello 👋

I've recently purchased a new property, with a nice sized rear garden with Conifer hedging the boundary.

I would like some assistance in identifying the species and some advise on helping them to recover from what looks like an over enthusiastic trim they've had.

Thanks in advance

Hi @rcrailproIKSw1Eww - unfortunately, the hedge shows all the signs of being leylandii, or a similar variety, and once they're cut back too far [ie into brown wood] they don't regrow. Many hedging conifers are the same, and have to be carefully maintained from early on.Thuja is an exception, as it will grow back from being cut back hard.
The fact that other planting is already filling the gaps - I can't see it clearly enough, but could be ivy or similar, suggests the dead wood in the gaps hasn't recovered from some time ago, and won't now do so.  If it's Thuja, and was cut back recently - ie autumn/early winter, it would re grow.
There's nothing you can do to make it re grow, so it's then a case of allowing that other planting to take over the bare areas, or actively planting some more ivy [or similar ] to the job more rapidly, and then treat that all as hedge. The only other alternative is removal, and replace with something that can be trimmed without any worry of die back.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
