    What weeds are they?
I would hand pull them, but if they're really persistent ones like dandelions etc, then you can spot treat the foliage with a weedkiller. They have to be growing well enough for it to be effective though, and you need to do it on a calm day. It would be a good idea to isolate the Irises with a physical barrier as far as possible too, to prevent anything getting on them.
The alternative is to lift the Irises, pot them up temporarily, treat or pull the weeds, then replant.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Our problem is with grass and now wood avens. This has started to take over a large area of the garden and whilst in amongst the iris very very difficult to remove.. Hand weeding is the only way but I have had to dig up some of the irises to be able to get the avens plants out completely.

I would lift them, weed the bed and replant.
  • Thankyou for those 3 replies. I guessed that was the best and only thing to do. I had to do it last year too!!! However, I am pleased you were able to confirm that it was the thing to do. I was hoping I could skip it for something better as my poor old Arthritic bones are struggling at present!! However, The Irises are so beautiful when they arrive, that it is worth a bit of discomfort and a hot bath after the job is done.
    Happy Gardening.
