The President Clematis

I have a The President Clematis that’s new to me. It’s wrapped up a 6 ft tall cane which I haven’t undone yet. There are new buds starting but the lowest ones of any significance are around the 4-5ft mark. That’s alot of bare clematis at eye level and below.

Can I do anything bar extreme chopping back to help it start some buds lower down?

The President is group 2 which means a light tidying up prune in February/March and a light tidying prune after flowering.

I would prune your new one to just above fat, healthy buds. It's still early in the year and it may make more new buds and hopefully produce more shoots from the ground.

  • @Busy-Lizzie would wrapping it on an obelisk so it’s a little more horizontal, or 45 degrees at least,  help- or is that Rose specific?

I don't really know, though my clematis produce flowers even when growing straight up whereas my climbing roses make more flowers when spread out sideways.
