Removing an invading type of grass in Lawn

I re-landscaped my back garden as I had to put new path in to a new back door position about 5 years ago. I laid rolls of turf to create the lawn. It was ok for a few years but recently a grass has invaded that as thin blade a bit like red and seems to fall over and die and rots. I want to get back to a broad leave type of grass. Advice on getting rid of it and the type of grass seed I should use to rested to a broad leave type of grass.

Do you have the spec for the turf? It might have contained a proportion of fine-leaved grasses like bents or fescues, and if your conditions suit these better, they might have come to dominate over the broader leafed types (usually dwarf ryegrass). Fine grass mixes, often labelled "luxury lawn" or similar, are generally regarded as better quality but less hard-wearing than coarser "utility lawn" grasses (think bowling green as opposed to football pitch). It's much more common on here for people to ask about coarse grasses invading their fine lawn!
If yours is a "luxury" type turf, I think it's been allowed to get a bit long - time to start mowing as soon as it's dry enough - start with a high cut and work your way down.  You could try overseeding with a "utility" grass seed mix if you prefer the appearance of coarser grasses.
