Magnolia grandiflora brown spots on leaves

Hi everyone.
Is this  normal or do I need to do something.
Tree was bought as a fairly well established specimen about 3 years ago.
It hasn't done particularly well to honest but has been improving.
It does get the odd feed/water during the summer.

Thanks

  • Is that a Magnolia? Mine doesn't have such waxy leaves. Looks more Rhododendron-like to me?

    Yes it is!
The everygreen varieties have the waxy leaves.
My granny was over once and told me it was a rhododendron. I had to show her a picture of it in flower and she still didn't believe me!

Magnolia grandiflora is evergreen, and eventually the older leaves go brown spotted then yellow then drop off. Nothing to worry about.  I presume yours is too young to flower  but the flowers are huge bowls of a cream colour with a slight lemony scent.  People do not recognise it as a magnolia.  They flower better in a sunny position, through the summer not in Spring like the deciduous magnolias.  Mine is quite upright but the best I have seen is outside the church in the middle of St Ives in Cornwall, a very sheltered position and it flowers magnificently.

    @fidgetbones
    Thank you. Great info.
Could you take a picture of your leaves for me>?!!!
Mine has flowered with mixed results. I believe it was grown in Italy so probably needed a few years to acclimatize.
And yes they are an absolutely magnificent when mature.

I think it was a GW special on magnolias that inspired us to get one.
Maybe is was this clip @ 2mins ( I know not grandiflora)

  • Thanks fidgetbones,
lovely tree and your pictures put me at ease!

    Thanks again
  • Ours is a wonderful specimen. We bought it many decades ago for 50p (really) and it loves where it is and continues to grow to great height and width. The leaves though do start to show aging (but then we all do). The lovely flowers and waxy leaves are greatly admired by us and the birds that hide in the foliage.
