Laying turf new build property

Hi,

I am a total beginner😂

me and my partner bought a new build property in December and was advised to not lay turf in the garden until early this year. Started looking at how to prep the turf and I am absolutely lost😂

there is weeds growing and due to
the heavy rain there is puddles accumulating. The soil is very heavy and doesn't break apart well so not sure if you can lay turf on top
of this.

I was willing to take this task on myself but no idea where to start as online has a million and one different ideas

Any help would be greatly appreciated

thank you

  • There are quite a few threads on this subject - have you tried the Search Function to begin with ? It may be a bit depressing initially to read thru the various threads but would hopefully give you a starting point.  Have a look at the Lawn thread which is on this page posted by @furyp3OoOxisA4 and has some advice to offer.
It always seems a problem with new builds as there is generally a lot of rubble and foot fall causing drainage issues for the new owner.
It's not so much a matter of prepping the turf as prepping the ground before turfing or seeding :)

@philippasmith2 is right - it's about the prep before any turf is laid or seeding done. It sounds like you have clay, which is a great growing medium, but usually requires some amending to make it well draining in wet climates, but holds moisture better in hot dry areas of the country. You'll see from that other thread that it's a common query on the forum.
Can you offer a bit more info @doltonday1793424 and a few ohotos if possible? Rough location, general climate etc. That will help with advice.  :)
