My Tulips are Flowering!

CatDouchCatDouch Posts: 488
I was very surprised this morning to see that my tulips have started flowering, it seems very early.  I checked the info on the packets they came in and, if they’re the right ones, it says April/May.  I wasn’t sure they’d flower as I planted the bulbs in early November and they’ve been outside in all the rain we’ve had, not under cover at all!  I thought they might have rotted but happily they haven’t.

I'm not surprised about your tulips being in bloom. I have daffodils starting to flower and pictures from last year show them in bloom a month later. Normally the spring bulbs flower in succession with the iris reticulata and snowdrops kicking off the display but everything seems to be flowering at the same time this year. No tulips yet though.

  • That does seem early @CatDouch - most of the daffs flowering here but Tulips and Hyacinths have a bit to go.

I like your pot, beautifully aged and weathered.

@CatDouch Lovely but not all that surprising. As others have said the weather is quite mild for the season this year... What species are they? I've just checked and one of my Tulipa turkestanica specimens has just opened, but they are early species anyway.

Strangely I have just found a couple of  dwarf Tulips in flower here. Weird weather.

Yes it has been really mild recently hasn’t it and I am in South Devon so perhaps not surprising!
I’m not sure what species they are @Papi Jo the packaging that I think they came from says Chameleon Tulips?
The pots were bought new @Marlorena but are made to look aged. I really like them but can’t remember where I got them as I’d like some more.

Too early for any here, although there's foliage appearing, but if those are species/botanical tulips [I'm guessing that's the case] they're mainly earlier than the other types. Even if they're meant to be later, the odd swings of weather can throw them out of kilter. The big advantage of those are, that they're usually bright colours, so it's a welcome sight in late winter.
    Enjoy them anyway!  :)

They certainly look like Botanical Tulips, which do flower earlier, but certainly not that early with me, usually around the end of March.-

Very nice - and I agree, lovely pot.  I turfed out some tulip bulbs from a pot that had broken and popped them into a nearby plastic pot until I decided where I would replant them.  Forgot all about it until this morning when I saw they are all sprouting!  With no earth around them!
