Strawberry Hill

JohnjoeJohnjoe Posts: 77
I have a couple of Strawberry Hill (DA) roses, and they seem a bit stringy, they are a climber, but I was wondering if it'd be ok to keep them pruned to a shrub, about 2-3 ft high? Any advice is welcome, as my two roses look nothing like the pictures on the DA website.

How old are they? Have you fed them?

I hope my new one will grow like a climber.

I do feed fairly regularly. I have Shropshire Lad and it’s a stunner every summer so not sure if this poor blighter isn’t getting enough light

How shady is it? Does the fence face north? They like sun.

I can't see any support on that fence. It will need wires or a trellis to attach it to. Then the main canes are trained out sideways and the side shoots coming off those canes should be pruned to 2-4 buds.

It can take climbing roses about 3 years to get going.

Its a south facing garden so that fence faces East, I've used canes to guide it to height, and it does sit in semi-shade in Summer when the Magnolia comes into leaf, I've not attached it to the fence yet, so maybe that should be a job to get done before Spring has properly sprung

My first year plant was almost always in bloom in a pot.. lot of superbly scented clusters.. It has gone to the ground this year, will see how it does.. I had it as a shrub in pot but found the canes too floppy for that purpose and hence not many pics as all the canes were flopping down.. could be because it was a first year specimen..
