Water meters?

    Always make sure you know what water companies are charging you for. Here we have separate drainage for rain water and it goes into the river but Welsh Water have still been charging people for disposal of rain water. They should also give you a discount if you have sufficient rain water harvesting.
    I'm on a meter and my bills have been quite high for a while as we both work from home and the kids have been using more than their fair share of water. Now they're older it's dropped to £39 a month and we're using less than 100 litres/person/day. Building regulations in Wales requires a designed use of less than 110 Ltrs/person/day for reference.
    If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

    I looked up some old bills last night. We are currently paying between £200 and £300 a year for our water and sewerage, with a water meter. The last bill before the meter was fitted ( back in 2008 ) was £1200! And our rates have been going up every year, so based on that, our water bill would probably be through the roof now.

    We have paid the following for our 3bed semi, 2 adults;

    -Approx. £80pcm 2020 (not sure what happened here but we suspect the previous owners submitted a dud reading and we were left to pick up the bill)
    -£28pcm 2021
    -£44pcm 2022
    -£28pcm 2023 (aug 2023-Jan 2024 £2pcm)
    -£49pcm 2024

    We've lost water for around 5 weeks in total over the past 3 years and regularly have low pressure. Last outage was for a day in January. I suspect my bill is high (£49) because South East Water are trying to recoup the compensation they have been paying me for the past 6 months. Fully expect my bill to be totally unpredictable following the reading this summer.

    In my opinion life was much simpler (and cheaper) when we were unmetered at our old property prior to 2020.

    The positive of having a metered supply is you can directly benefit financially by making a few small changes to your water usage.
