Laburnum tree hole in trunk

We’ve just had part of laburnum cut down - big branch in danger of coming down over conservatory. In the remaining trunk is a hole although rest of tree growing strongly. Should I cover or fill hole?

Trees tend to hollow out as they age @Katemac so I wouldn't worry too much about filling the hole though you could always stick a plant pot in it with a pretty, small plant. Sempervivums would be a reasonable choice.

  • Many years ago I had the same problem with an old apple tree. An old gardener told me to fill the hole with cement to stop rain from collecting in it. I didn't follow his advice but the tree died a few years later. I have never heard this idea again so have no idea if it was made up by him or if it was an old way of treating the problem.

Thanks Joyce. I was thinking rain will start to rot the tree & was thinking of that expanding foam although not very eco friendly.

I like the idea of the flower pot with something trailing in it . The hole would be blocked up to stop the rain getting in and it’s eco friendly.
