Help identifying this vine/climber?

Hi all,
I have spotted a tree in my garden that has a long dead vine hanging from it.  I didn't sever the vine, but it looks to have been purposely encouraged to grow up the tree.  I have found what looks like the stump(?) and it looks to be regrowing again.

Can anyone help me identify what type of climber this is, and if I would want to encourage it up the tree again?

Thanks!

    it's a clematis
    Probably one of the bigger ones that can scramble into trees

  • Ah great, perhaps I'll get this tied in to the trees once it gets a little bigger.  Is there anything I can do for it in the nearer term, perhaps a bridge to the tree to encourage it that way and keep it off the ground?

    I think that's a Russian Vine.

    Those don’t look at all like any Russian vine leaves I’ve ever seen

    You could loosely tie the new shoots onto the tree, they're quite fragile at that size.

    If you could post another photo of the leaves when some are properly out, we should be able to confirm what it is.

    @nutcutlet  😊
    I think that part of the stem is above where it’s been severed in the past by person or persons unknown.
