Hellebore care

We’ve recently moved into a new property, with lots of lovely plants (overgrown, as previous owners were unable to care for it any longer). The Hellebore is lovely, but in the wrong place (building a garden office in that location) so will have to be moved. Question - should I cut back the whole plant when it is moved, or just the old large leaves. Also when is the best time to move the plant? Thank you 😊

Hey there! First off, congrats on the new property and your lovely Hellebore! Moving it is a great idea, especially if you're building a garden office. When transplanting, I'd suggest trimming back just the old large leaves, leaving the newer ones intact. This helps reduce stress on the plant and allows it to focus energy on new growth.

The ideal time to move your Hellebore is typically in early spring or late fall when it's not in full bloom. That way, it has a bit of time to settle in before facing the full heat of summer or the cold of winter.

Wishing you and your Hellebore all the best in your new garden adventure! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.  ;)

Irrespective of whether you are moving it, I would cut off all the old leaves (the ones lying flat around the plant). The ones in the middle surrounded by flowers are the new ones coming through - leave them.

I would move it now, actually. Go around it with a spade cutting down into the soil, then get your spade deep under it and try and lever it out with the soil remaining around the roots. Then transfer to your re-dug new hole. Firm in well.
