They will thank you for anything you can provide in the way of a pool.

Thank you for the info. 👍  I could definitely provide ground cover around.  I have a million carex grasses, which is their preferred resting place in my garden.

My frogs definitely seem happy enough.  They hang around and I see them often.  They have the bird bath for cooling off, but nowhere to spawn.
An upturned dustbin lid would be fine for a mini pond.

Well, I could definitely manage that! 👍

You do have to think about what the tadpoles will eat … otherwise they’ll just eat each other …. so some plants in the pond will help create the right environment for tiny invertebrates etc.
iIts not just the physical ability to spawn that the frogs need … but also what happens next …

Good point!  Don't want hungry tadpoles.

In the article ^^^, it says the rim of a bin lid should be just below ground level, but doesn't that mean surrounding soil could wash in and make it all muddy?
  • You could buy a bag of cobbles to put around the edge. The frogs and froglets could hide under them. Buy a length of pond liner, cut up a compost sack, to lay over the edge of the lid with an overlap at the edge to stop the soil washing in, topped with the cobbles. I have done that with the edge of my pond but used slabs bedded on gravel for the edging. I discovered frogs burrow into the gravel and set up home under the slabs.

👍  Good thinking.  Was wondering about an underlay of pond liner or similar.  Stones are easy.  I have millions.  For every bucket of soil I excavate, I get at least two buckets of stones in all sizes.
  • Frogs and toads are resourceful little devils. They tuck themselves into very small, nooks and crannys.
I am always disturbing them in my garden. You could also put some stones in the bottom of the dustbin lid. My frogs like to sit in the pond, on top of plants or planters with their heads out of the water and their back ends in the water. I quite often have a sense of being watched and then realise there is a pair of beady eyes watching me. I also talk to them!

😁  They certainly do fix you with a stare!
