Hello all, can anyone identify this tree from its winter shape, the bark and the emerging buds? Many thanks.

Can you wait until the leaves come out?

    Bumping up.
@Silver surfer have you any ideas?
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

I think it could be a hornbeam tree.

I can Busy-Lizzie but I think Ladybird4 might already have it.  I googled hornbeam winter silhouette and I think you're right Ladybird4.  Many thanks to you both.

That looks like a hornbeam to me as well. The buds on beech and hornbeam are similar, quite sharp to the touch, but the shape of the tree looks hornbeam.
