Fresh horse manure

My friend as brought me some horse manure without straw. It's not well rotted. Am I right in saying this is no good for this year. Or can I mix it with something to be able to use it.

Is it what I call ‘field pickings’ … ie droppings gathered from a field where horses graze, or is it manure from a stable which also contains some sort of bedding?, eg wood shavings, shredded paper or whatever if as you say there’s no straw.

Field pickings I think nothing mixed in
  • Leave it in a heap - cover it if possible to accelerate decomposition and use it when you think it right. Possibly Autumn depending on your climate but more likely next Spring. You can mix it with chopped straw or wood shavings which would stretch it out a bit but I would suggest that the actual manure still needs to decompose from the natural state before it is used.
  • It's great to add to a compost heap...

My nan always used to hang it in a hessian sack in the water barrel and then use it for watering beans in summer.

Absolutely fine spread around roses … it’s what my grandfather did …  best for it not to touch the rose stems tho, as it may ‘scald’ … just scatter it over the root area and leave it to break down and be incorporated into the soil by the worms and weather.

If I have any I usually add it to my compost heap … it’s a great ‘activator’ and speeds up the decomposition process.

Thankyou dove from above. I don't have a compost heap garden not big enough.

Then put it around the roses as you said. 👍
