Trimming my roses

Hi, I am about to trim my roses, but I am unsure how to do it. Apparently, I should trim next to the first new bud, however I cannot locate it. Additionally, the rose is very woody so it will be hard to use a secateurs for a sharp line. Should I use a saw?

The previous pruning was done by a different owner. Any tips on what I should do?

For their rose beds between double carriageways, Aberdeen CC used to us a chain saw at about 18' above the soil.    Just above where the last person did yours should be fine. One can over-think some tasks.

Some new growth will grow into the centre (bad), they are best growing outwards (good).  But better to make a start.

If you wait to see the new buds, they will probably be too near the top.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

Is it a climbing rose or a bush rose? Hard to tell from the photo.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
