Inherited roses - Help please

I inherited two roses from my mum when she died last year. They were in a bit of a mess and very leggy so had to prune them to be able to transport them.  Although they’ve been neglected they are beautiful when in flower & smell gorgeous.  I’m inclined to keep them in pots on my patio but as I’m new to rose growing I’m looking for some help about repotting them and what I should do to give them a new lease of life.

Now is a good time to repot them. Roses like to be in a big pot, preferably abot 60cms tall and 60cms wide at the top. Use a mix of general compost and topsoil or John Innes no. 3. You can mix in some rotted manure too if you can get hold of some. Feed them some rose fertiliser in March and again after flowering. Keep them weeded.

Sorry about your Mum but nice to have her roses.

Do you know what varieties they are?

  • Thank you for your advice Busy Lizzie.  I’ll get onto this if it ever stops raining!  Not sure of the names but I believe they are hybrid teas.

If they really are hybrid teas they can be pruned even shorter.
