@DaveGreig- I grow V.bonariensis, and yes - they don't care for our climate here, and you're in the dry bit of Scotland Mine are all in raised beds to help with the drainage, and I take cuttings to grow on as that's the easiest method of keeping plants going. They just don't readily seed here - the seed rots, or it doesn't manage winter. I've only ever had a handful of self seeded plants, and that's only been in the recent mild winters, where they've seeded under other plants which have helped to protect them, or in gravelled areas with the same sort of protection. I grow another Verbena though. I think it's V. hastata [but I'm not sure] which is also not meant to be particularly hardy, but it's survived 'normal' winters here, never mind the mild ones we've been getting the last two or three years. I've had it quite a long time, but it's in a little SW facing raised bed, so has more protection. It doesn't get as big as V. bon., and has a different habit, and the foliage is a bit rougher. Dies back and looks a bit manky over winter, but it's good apart from that. I think I got it in B&Q, but I think it's fairly easy to get The flowers elongate a bit as they mature, and make seedheads.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
