Log burner outside?

We have a cast iron log burner in our living room.  It's capacity is enough to heat almost the whole house which means, if we light it, we end up on the floor to avoid the heat.   I thought, naively, that it would be a simple matter to buy a small 5kw capacity burner and swap.

No.  9000€ and lots of mess.

Turns out they cost thousands of euros which is amazing as there's no technology like a CH  boiler would have.  It's just a shell that burns wood.

Second surprise after the technician came to check - our installation is not conform with current safety regs.    We have to have the outside chimney treated to make it waterproof, the flue lined to make it heatproof and non combustible, an access trap for cleaning and maintenance and additional lining to the wall behind the fire as our plaster board is ordinary and not fireproof.

Not going there so the question is - can I use it outside instead of a firepit or will it just sit and rust?

There is a huge choice of 5kW stoves in the UK for about £1,000 or less. Does that €9,000 charge include the cost of all the other work?

I think cost of stove and installation is nothing like that in the UK.

It's a British log burner made by Stovax.  Priced at about 3000€ with 15% discount during Feb.   The rest is the other materials and labour, guaranteed 10 years.  VAT at 5.5% cos it's an old house.

Is the old log burner going to rust outside or do I need to find it a new home?

    Hi @Obeixx
And what is that compared to the cost of getting the old one reglo? Pros and cons.

The flue goes up through the wall and then into the loft so it passes thru wooden floors and roof beams.   Not prepared to risk lighting it again without all the safety amendments @tui34 .   Don't want to light it anyway as the heat it gives off is suffocating even if we open the door to the hall.

It has to go.  It's just a big black blob sitting gathering dust.   We have CH and we have a normal built-in fireplace in the dining room if needed.

I've been looking at adding a log burner in the house with a chimney as well the quotes so far are nowhere near 9000euro that seems ridiculous.

I think a cast iron stove will rust quite fast outside . Steel one will probably do better for longer but will start to rust as well, how long that will take is hard to say .

May be better off with a stone / brick firepit ?

It's more a case of recycling it @Perki.   Don't need a fire pit here really so it would be an occasional luxury.

@Obelixx I think you might be better to sell if if you can with the proviso that the seller removes it as well - they are quite heavy I understand. You could then use the money to buy yourself an outdoor firepit if you really want one.

  • I have one sitting looking balefully at me ! I’ve never lit it
we moved house , there the living room was very large , the heat from the log burner was ok there , doors open the heat went up the stairs , I tried selling it , but no takers , there was a leak that made the room damp , the stove rusted !
Do try to sell it , even give the thing !
