Roses & Clematis query

Hello there, are there any non-thuggish evergreen clematis to plant alongside a climbing rose? Many thanks 😊

Armandii and Cirrhosa are the 2 main groups of evergreen clematis, winter or very early spring flowering though and many are quite thuggish. Have a look at clematis cirrhosa Freckles.

Cartmanii are also evergreen but can be tricky and don't like poorly drained soil. Look up Early Sensation.

Any reason for not having a deciduous one?

It will also depend on your climate, location and the aspect. Some of those evergreen clems are much fussier than the deciduous ones.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

It also depends on how much space there is for it.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

A quick email to a reputable clematis nursery might get a helpful response.

And one more question to answer...
If you already have a rose in place, which one is it?
  • There’s no roses yet, but she’s thinking of getting one or all 3 of these …not sure which one will go in that particular spot …

    Update:
it’s for my mums new garden which is pretty bare at the moment. The soil has good drainage and is west facing, she wants a climbing rose for the fence which is part trellis and doesn’t gave her much privacy. I thought a combination with a clematis might resolve this problem. I’ve grown a beautiful winter clematis for a number of years so know what a good screen it can make and a similar winter greenery would look spectacular behind the birch we planted. However, it’s definitely thuggish so won’t work with the rose …which is why I was throwing the question out to this forum. I’ll definitely be checking out freckle and early sensation, any other suggestions very much welcome 😊
