Climbing rose

I’ve just had go at pruning my climbing rose. I’m having difficulty in deciding which are the main stems, and so should be left alone, and which are laterals, and should be cut back. Maybe my pruning of last year could have been better. Is it ok if a main stem branches out into 2 or 3 main stems?

I would like the rose to grow more or less vertically until it goes above the window and then I will train it horizontally along the wisteria.

Any advice on further pruning would be welcome. The rose has had 2 seasons of flowering. The photo of the rose in flower is its first season.

Laterals are the short side shoots coming off the main canes that are going upwards..  you can shorten them if you want, I think you've done some already,  but the longer ones can form part of the framework too, so I wouldn't shorten those too much..  from what I can see I don't think there's much for you to do really, just let it grow up, as that's your plan..

Nice rose, which one is it please?..

  • Thanks for that Marlorena. I’m sorry but I don't seem to have a record of the name of the rose. It has certainly bloomed well so far so hoping it will continue. Going to feed it in March.
