Pruning wisteria , it's never flowered

I have a wisteria,  about 8years old and its never flowered . I haven't got any bed next to the house so I'm growing in a pot as a standard .
I have pruned following RHS guidelines,  twice yearly and one year only once to see if it made a difference.  I would normally prune now but before I do am appealing for help in case I can do something else that results in some lovely flowers I hanker after !
Thank you in advance !

Did the wisteria come with a name variety / plant label ? How much sunlight does it get as well .
  • I think maybe Japanese dragon or variation of that. It gets masses of sunlight , garden faces south and it stands alone , no shadows from anywhere

Wisteria is not supposed to be grown in a pot, full stop.

I agree with @Papi Jo.   Wisteria need a good, deep root run so yours is probably over heating the roots in that pot in full sun and hungry and thirsty too.

If you can't get it in he ground, give it a bigger pot and feed and water generously.  Tomato feed in liquid tonic and slow release granular form will do fine.

And keep to the pruning regime - back to 2 buds in February and 7 in July.

How big is the pot? It would have to be very big, better in the ground. Do you feed and water it?
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • I probably don't feed it enough but watered religously. Pot quite big , doesnt blow over on high winds
  • OK! I've got the message!
There is a possible space at the front in soil but would mean north facing , would there be any point in that and also should I prune before reporting/ moving ?
Thank you all for replies, I have taken them seriously

I've seen a huge one growing on anorth facing wall in Belgium but it did get sun late afternoon.   It depends howlight and bright it is or wheher it's heavily overshadowed and/or exposed to cold winds.

I wouldn't particular say wisteria can't be grown in a pot obviously better in the ground , I've seen a enormous wisteria grown in a very big wooden planter that had rotted away , the wisteria was moved around using a digger it wasn't even in the ground when I were looking at it but it was flowering .

And wisteria make adorable bonsai specimens

I asked for a name thinking it may not be grafted , it sounds like you have black dragon . If you can put it in a larger pot and keep on top of feeding with a balanced feed like FishBBone or growmore - chicken manure pellets and swap to a high potassium feed after the summer pruning, they no guarantee it will flower but hopefully one day.
