daisy lawn

Hi everyone
We have one tiny little daisy plant in our lawn (that appeared on its own), but in 2.5 years it doesn't seem to have spread. I'd love to have a daisy lawn (buttercups too, ideally), and I'm wondering whether I can direct sow or whether given that they haven't spread I'm better off buying plugs. I saw on older threads that they can be hit or miss when direct sown? I'm not sure I really have enough space to grow my own plugs because I'm already growing a bunch of annuals!
Thanks :)

If it hasn't spread, maybe the conditions aren't right.  Mine grow in the sunny part of the grass area.

Thanks @B3. That's what surprises me about the fact it's there - it's in the shady part of the lawn. I guess that if the conditions aren't right I'd be better off direct sowing and hoping for the best (given that my seed pack cost £1) than spending loads on plugs.

Try a few of the seeds in trays and then you have your own plugs too😊

I have tried planting daisies in my lawn and every time they fail even though this village is awash with daisy splattered grass. Sometimes local conditions just aren't right so I have started growing all sorts of other plants that look like bellis perennis, in various sizes from tiny to chin level, just so that I can get my daisy fix. So, @puschkinia, if your daisies don't behave, just go a different route.

that's a good idea @Ceres - i was also thinking of trying chamomile, but the flowers are so much taller than lawn daisy. do you have any tiny ones you recommend? 100% agree on needing a daisy fix :D

Sadly the wild daisy that won't grow where I want it to is the shortest I know of. The alpine aster is a fair bit taller but has a touch of the wild daisy about it. https://www.chilternseeds.co.uk/item_149x_aster_alpinus_albus_white_beauty_seeds

  • Hi, I bought daisy and other nectar lawn plants from Joel Ashton's website last year, Wild Your Garden, he also has a youtube channel giving great advice.  He does say that scattering seeds in an existing lawn can prove problematic, these delicate flowers have to combat strong grass roots etc so it's sometimes best to plant 9cm pots direct into the lawn - he gives free advice so worth contacting him!

Oh I missed these replies, thanks @Ceres & @strattonikkisan21498! I've started growing little daisy plugs in the house, but I'll take a look at the alpine aster & Joel Ashton's website (I think he's great too - I watched many of his youtube videos!). Thanks so much for your help
