Apple tree bark problem

We noticed some issues with the apple trees in our community woodland this morning, which I'm hoping someone on this site can help with. A younger tree has a patch that appears to have had the bark gnawed off by some critter, and the crown looks pretty unhealthy (didn't get a picture of the crown). A nearby, mature tree has also lost a significant amount of bark. I'm not sure if these problems are related, but if anyone has any ideas, I would be very grateful!

I think you would be well advised to try and protect the trunks of the young trees in your community woodland. If you have things like rabbits and deer gnawing at the bark then you are going to lose trees which would be a great pity. It is easy to cobble together the wire cylinders from reels of mesh.
