Cherry Tree Move....

Hello Everyone,
We are looking to move a Cherry Tree into a pot and was wondering if this is possible?  The cherry tree is about 5ft tall and the trunk is about 3 inches in diameter.   Would it be possible to move it into a pot and if yes, how large/deep would the pot need to be ??  Any experience/help/advice would be super appreciated :)  Many Thanks

If you do indeed mean 3" diameter (not circumference) that is a decent sized trunk. As a general rule of thumb a tree's roots extend at least as far as its canopy and with a five foot tree that to me would suggest a very large pot would be required and you might not fancy moving it about!
It would be difficult to avoid all damage to the root ball and the tree could suffer as a result. In any case it would need a lot of care for the rest of its life as it would be utterly dependent on you for water and nutrients. If the tree really is in the wrong position it might be better just to start again, but it seems a shame if it has established well.

Thank you so much for this.  Yes, we would really prefer to avoid moving the tree at all but unfortunately my mother in law is having to move and the tree has great sentimental value to her.  It is going to be super difficult I think to move without risking the tree and also how we will then move it as you said !!  Very difficult!!  Thank you so much for your advice and info :)
