Dividing scabious/scabiosa (when the time comes)

Not something I am doing today as the garden is currently under 1 meter of snow, but when spring eventually comes, I have four very large scabiosa (planted 5 years ago), which I probably should divide. My question is if anyone has experience of doing this, and if it is best to take up the whole clump, divide and replant (replenishing the soil underneath first), or to use a spade and divide, and leave half the plant and its root system undisturbed?

PS. The garden is under here somewhere....
  • I would wait until Spring and you can see the first signs of growth from the clumps. Dig each clump up, discard any hard woody parts, divide the root into 3 or 4 smaller clumps, and replant. It is a good idea to fork some well-rotted compost into the area, especially when replanting in the same place.
