Wood anemones and winter aconites.  The different Arums...Italicum is not as invasive as maculata and has very distinctive veined leaves.

Wood Anemone, yes.  Winter Aconite, yes.  Red Campion - no, don't go there!  It's lethal!  Spreads by seed everywhere and it's a pain in the butt to get rid of without giving yourself a hernia.  And it won't restrict itself to your woodland.  But  it's pretty.  If you like bright pink, tall and sprawly thugs.

Common valerian might work quite well. If it's happy it seeds around a lot. A very pretty umbellifer that can offer good height. Probably best if there is a damp-ish, light spot. Easy from seed

Nice, common valerian, but it would need semi shade, so one for the edge of woodland, where it might thrive, rather than anywhere with full shade.

Back to your original post, @a1154 - dog violets would be lovely for the margins of your woodland, providing your soil is neither acidic or very wet.
