Water shoots on Magnolia

Last Winter our Magnolia tree was heavily damaged by heavy snow and 2 of the 3 main branches snapped.

As expected where we pruned back the damage the tree has sent up multiple water shoots.

Does anybody have any advice on the best way to manage this through further pruning this year? The guidance appears to be to leave pruning until mid summer and then I’m guessing remove most of the water shoots back to the main trunk, selecting one or two to remain but cut half way up just about an outward facing shoot to promote branching?

I’m also conscious that the tree is now lopsided with one trunk twice as high as the others. Should I now cut the remaining trunk back to the same height as the others??

  • The advice sounds exactly right. Try to choose strong new leads that will follow the direction of the removed branches to retain the original shape. Magnolias do not like being pruned.
