Broad Beans

I sowed the seed in Nov, some beans are about 3 inches high but some stems are going black and wilting over to the ground, any ideas why?

Are they in the open ground, pots? Inside or out?

Mine always do that, I never have success with autumn sown broad beans, yet I know several people who do. I sow them in March, works much better.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Thanks, I normally sow mine in March but read that Autumn sowings are earlier and avoid the dreaded blackfly!
  • The excessive wet is likely to cause rotting of broad beans.
I cannot sow any legumes outside due to the number of little brown furries who just dig them up and eat them. I always sow mine in pots in an unheated conservatory, the little things find their way into the greenhouse. I assume they must smell them.

Last winter most down our allotment lost their autumn sown broad beans. I know some didn't bother trying again and a couple who have lost theirs this year but I haven't seen that many people to say it's widespread.
Even the few that did survive last year were knocked back to the point that spring sold ones caught and passed them.
