Acer bark damage

Please help! I discovered this damage on my mature acer. I don’t know what has caused it! I’m hoping for advice on what to do to help it repair & recover. Thank you!

    That looks like animal damage. There is nothing you can do to repair it, certainly don't cover it with anything. Hopefully the tree will be ok.
