Should I Prune this rose.

It's the Pilgrim climbing rose, planted last May if I remember correctly and I want it to cover the fence.
I have looked on DA sight and it says year one take off old leaves , Pull down any new canes , cut back dead canes and take off canes coming away from were you want them.
So apart from taking off the last of the leaves should I do anything else to this rose.
Thanks

Well you should cut out the dead brown bits, there are 2 or 3 I can see ..

As for general pruning, you should refer to this guide by Austin's, as it's one of their roses..   Year One is what you want to read.. concise and to the point..

  • Thanks Marlorena , I saw the three dead bits one is dead right back to the soil so should I prune this right back and the other two shall I just take away the dead bits back to the green cane ?
Austin advice says cut back any growth coming away from the structure that cannot be tied back and pull down longer stems to 45 degrees or more and tie in against your wires.
But all the growth is like wispy stuff like a shrub and not really long enough to tie back ? So apart from taking off the last few leaves and cutting off the three dead bits I'm  not sure how to follow his advice.

Yes prune out the dead stems or back to the green growth where you have it.

You really need some wiring on the fence to train it back to, otherwise it will continue to grow outwards towards the light/sun and away from the fence. I suspect it's East/South facing?  It's some 25 years since I grew this rose, but from memory it threw up a tall cane in the middle, straight up, in the 2nd season..
Eventually you will need to cut back those outward facing canes, as they are too stiff to train backwards to the fence.  Also, that bamboo framework is of no use, it came with the rose but it's not strong enough to hold anything, neither are those little blue sticks in there, they're not going to be any use really and just makes it look messy.

For now, just remove the dead bits, remove the superfluous bamboo sticks, and shorten the growths coming outwards towards the camera.. pruning back to a node that is facing towards the fence if you can.

Consider some wiring on the fence.

  • OK thanks again .
It's on a North facing fence and yes I'll definitely get some wires  set up just haven't got round to it yet.The bamboo sticks came with the plant so I'll  pull them out and all the little  green sticks were to hold the blooms up in summer because stems were to thin to support them.
Looking at it again  like you say everything comes off two short canes at the bottom  and they are to short and stiff to train back so maybe I should have lent these back towards  the fence when I planted it ?
Hopefully it will eventually throw up some more canes that I can train on to the wires.
This  is my first rose so thanks again for your help.
