What to grow on low brick wall to look nice (and deter people sitting on it!)

There is a pyracantha hedge locally that I think was planted for this exact reason as it's forms a "comb over" to the top of the wall.
I have lots of pyracantha because as mentioned it's great for wildlife and a really easy plant. It has the real benefit of being so simple from cuttings and quite fast growing.

Is there any possibility of topping the wall with a low picket fence or similar and then growing something on it that you like?  A costlier option but if you don’t have any plans to move in future it could be a worthwhile investment.

A rose or two planted at the foot of the wall (assuming there is a bed your side) might be just the job. You might be lucky enough if you're quick to pick up a decent sized shrub rose at a reduced price which would grow more quickly than a pyracantha.

Strictly speaking a group of people, sitting on your wall, smoking, on a regular basis constitutes a nuisance and you could insist your local police gives them a warning. However in practice they would probably retaliate by making your life a misery so it's not a route I would go down if it can be avoided.

  • This is the epitome of British problems...as if people are such a nuisance. I too have a wall and facing a sports field...some people sit on it, doesn't bother me. The most obvious thing to do is to get a nice low fence installed that would be decorative and nobody will be able to sit there.

As I know from my case low walls in front of properties is just a design issue, not a people issue.

I disagree @amancalledgeorge ! - they are smoking all the time too, second-hand smoke is carcinogenic and not pleasant to breathe in when you do not choose to do so. Windows need to be opened to allow for ventilation.

It’s great that folk sitting on your wall doesn’t bother you  @amancalledgeorge … you might have missed this part of the OP …

“… I wouldn’t mind but it’s the same group every day for hours each day and they all smoke, and all the smoke drifts into my living room which is really unpleasant especially in summer when I have the windows open….”

I don’t think it’s unreasonable for @emjl9891 to try to prevent this happening … do you?

Many years ago my school-bus used to pass the old John Players Tobacco factory in Nottingham ; not that I'm suggesting anything here  ;) but the main wall around the factory had thick concrete on the top ; this was covered in thousands of shards of broken glass !!! Not many attempted to climb or sit on this particular structure .

emjl9891 said:, or should I plant in flower bed below and train up the wall?

Could we have a photo please?

@Rubytoo a bed under the wall hasn't been mentioned.

Sorry I have messed up the quote above, but may have misunderstood emjl9891  (third post first page?) post, sounding like they do. Hey ho never mind.

    Sorry @Rubytoo, I missed that.
