Rose bush help

Hello, one half of the rose bush seems to be doing well but half has no growth. I don't think the pruning was too vigorous! Any ideas much appreciated. Do I ignore this, take half of the stump out or try something else? Thanks very much

How big is that pot? It looks far too small for a rose. Also the rose won't have enjoyed sharing its small space with the daffodils. The rose looks dead to me, but maybe that's just the photo. What sort of rose is it?

Have you fed it? Kept it moist? How long has it been in that pot?
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Hi, it's like a hole in the concrete that was left for rose bushes either side of the house so it's not in a pot. The half with stems seems ok and grows lovely orange roses. Thanks for replying!

I think you’d be suprised, if there’s a rose that’s looking unhealthy, a hard prune can invigorate it, it stimulates growth lower down the plant encouraging basal growth. If you’re deciding to remove it altogether I would first give it a hard prune this year then if it doesn’t recover consider planting a different shrub there.
id say prune the whole plant by a minimum of 50% or more. It also looks like it could do with be planted a bit lower, excavate the hole add some new compost, remove competing plants, try and cover the soil over the top of the crown of where all the stems start.

i agree also that hole is too small for a rose long term so maybe consider moving the rose completely.

I would put the daffs elsewhere. Does the hole go down into subsoil?
  • Hi, thanks both. That's really useful advice. I'm not sure about subsoil. We haven't been here that long so the planting is lovely but something we inherited
