Rhapsody in blue rose

Clair15Clair15 Posts: 2
I inherited one of these roses a few years ago. It wasn't really pruned before I got it, so has one large woody stem (about knee height) that then branches into two. It is very woody and looks almost like a standard rose. I know it's meant to be more bushy but worried how far down I can cut to make it fill out. If I cut down to where it branches, I'll end up with one thick piece of wood and nothing else. What should I do, as I don't want to lose it. Thanks

Welcome to the forum @Clair15 :)

Is there any chance of a photo ? We have several rose experts here who may well be able to advise, but a photo may be of help.

If you cut the stem back to about 8" from the ground that should encourage new shoots to come from the base and new growth from the lower stem, so it'll start to bush out.
Give it a mulch of rotted manure or similar in the spring (keeping it away from the stems a little) and that should set it up for the summer.
I'd leave it another couple of weeks before pruning.
