    I perhaps would not assume that there is just one rat.

    When you contact your Council about costs @RubyLeaf, check that the price includes VAT. I also agree with@Fire, there may be more. Two or three visits from a pest controller should solve your problem.

    Even if there is only one now … that one will meet a mate … I’ve seen figures stating that a pair of rats can produce over 1,000 offspring in one year …  in three years those 1,000 can potentially become around 500,000,000 … 🐀

    Worth making sure that they have no access to the internet as well as a food source - those online dating forums will only speed things up  :D
