Compost.....

Something's living in my compost bin.... I took the lid off to add vegetable peelings, and to my astonishment the compost appears to have been turned. No mostly green & vegetable waste, just lovely-looking friable compost. Would this be a rat?

Depends if there is any access to the bin at around ground level.  Has it actually been churned up/turned over or has the level just dropped without you noticing ?
  • I have had rodents bury under my bin and enter. I think both mice and rats.....

Is the base open to the ground?
  • Yes, the base is open to the ground.
The matter has definitely been churned - there's no way a bunch of veg peelings and garden weeds turn to compost in 2 weeks!
I've just taken the lid off, and the front 'door' and hosed vast amounts of water into it. Nothing came squeaking out! No waste has been put in for about 10 days now.

Have you got lots of red worms in there?
  • I found that rats did a great job of speeding up compost production...

It does sound like rats from your description....

Perhaps more likely that the rats ate the greenery and churned things up in the process.
