potted magnolia - dead?

Hi
I have a magnolia in a pot, and it started to have black/brown areas last winter in the leaves until all the leaves fell down.
The tree had some sprouts, but instead of being green and tender, as they were before, those were brown and hard, and they never developed to new leaves
Is it totally dead? Anything i can do to bring it back to live?
