Tree Fern

Hi, I have a tree fern, around 3ft. Do I plant it to the depth of the pot it’s in?

Thanks

@steph.jarrett I assume you are in the UK. Wrong time of year to plant out if that is the plan?

If you are in an area which gets winter frosts, I would keep it in an unheated greenhouse or garage until Spring, then plant it at the same depth as it is in its pot. If temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing, protect the crown in advance with horticultural fleece, wrapped around the trunk and in the well in the centre of the trunk where the new fronds will emerge. Keep the trunk and compost lightly moistened to ensure that the trunk and crown do not dry out.

  • I live in Devon, it has made it through the last 2 winters in the garden quite happily. Just wondered about planting depth.

It should be fine in your location.

@Hostafan1 gardens in Devon and is well-acquainted with tree ferns 😉 Hopefully he’ll see this (when he’s recovered from his flight and long drive back home) and may have more thoughts.
