Problem Moss On Path

I have a lot of moss on my garden path that I need to get rid of, but I don't want to killl the grass growing either side! I know this is the wrong time to treat it but some ideas before spring would be most welcome. Someone recommended Resolva moss killer ? There are several cats, including mine, in the area and no fences so not sure it would be safe....

  • It makes me wonder if it would make more sense to solve the source of the problem than just treating the manifestation of it. What is the surface, would it be possible to improve and divert moisture from the surface and maybe pressure wash it and seal it? Presuming it's a paver or brick path.

  • It is a council concrete path, somewhat uneven surface. I'm in my 70s and quite arthritic so not really up pressure washing unless I pay someone to do it - might look into that.... thanks
  • We recently moved home, and found the long concrete path to be moss covered over much of it's length.

I refuse to use chemicals, as I don't want to harm the environment either side. I bought a wire brush for a few pounds, and spent quite a few hours on my hands and knees, scrubbing the moss, and brushing off the loosened material.

I accept that it's a job you probably can't do yourself, but maybe you can find someone to do it for you.

But, I know it will return, so at some point within the next 12 months, a repeat will probably be necessary.

The cause? A hedge adjoining the path keeps the sun off. But the hedge also protects the garden from the westerly winds. It looks as though I have a job for life!!
  • in a few weeks time the bargain stores such as b&m and home bargains will start putting garden stuff back in, they usually stock weed burners quite cheap theyre easy to use and wont harm the environment  once youve got rid of it treat the path with thompsons water seal (available from b&q)this stops the rain from permeating the concrete and stops the moss from getting a toe hold it sinks straight in so doesnt run off into the environment.
    good luck Tim.

If the moss is thick use a hoe then a long handled wire brush.
  • We used Bio Washing powder sprinkled on the tarmac drive , that killed the moss then the rain seemed to wash it away
it did make the surface slippy , but really cleaned it

A moss killer designed for lawns would kill the moss but not the grass, e.g. iron sulphate. Be aware that iron sulphate could stain the concrete a rusty colour though.
