Thank you all, I have decking so don't have access to ground level to use the soil.
I have seen large pots sunk underneath decking, achieved by sawing tub-shaped holes into the decking. The advantage would be preventing any plants falling over in strong gusts of wind. Disadvantages could include the effort of sawing the wood and possibly weakening the decking and the plant would be lower in height than if the tub was placed on the decking. Accessibility of the plant for maintenance could also be more difficult.
Is it worth taking up some or all of the decking? If you are interested in gardening, you might find that an attractive prospect!
