Melon Varieties for UK

RedwingRedwing Posts: 1,511
I'm going to have space this year to grow a melon or two in a new tunnel.  It's decades since I've grown melons and would like some recommendations of varieties. What are the current best varieties for southern England in a south facing but unheated tunnel?
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

  • I haven't grown any recently but if it helps the RHS has updated their Award of Garden Merit lists last April and it features three varieties of melon:  'Alvaro' 'Emir' and 'Ogen' you can download a PDF on this page:

I grew the Ogen type but that was a few years ago and outdoors in SWFrance.  I found them easier because they are a relatively small variety, ripened well and had a good flavour.
I don't know the other 2 varieties mentioned above so can't say they'd be better/worse.
Fingers crossed for a good summer and that you get some decent fruits whichever variety you decide on  :)

I have grown outdoor wonder, with good success.  If growing outdoors it's best to put black  ground cover down and grow through that.  It does even better if you can grow under cover, greenhouse or polytunnel.

Thanks all, will look into those; Outdoor Wonder sounds good. Was thinking of cantaloupe or honeydew types; not watermelon.
