Holly help

We've got a holly tree ( trees? ) at the back of the garden. The birds love it but I'd like to take back control. Ideally it would be about half it's current size! Any ideas on how I'd start? Thanks.

Holly responds well to being cut hard back. I’d take it down to considerably below the height you want eventually .., I’d take it down to a couple of feet tall. Then clear out any weeds etc at the base, give it some fish, blood and bone innige spring, and it’ll make shoots from low down.

I’d allow it to grow up into a thick hedge, trimming it every year to keep the foliage tight. Trim it to a ‘A’ shape so it’s wider at the base than the top. That’ll ensure the bottom growth gets plenty of light and will keep it covered with foliage, rather than getting ‘bare-legged’ as it grows taller.

I’d get on with it asap … around here the birds are already prospecting for nest sites. 😊

  • Thank you! That's very helpful and yes, I shall start asap.
