Yew
I am not exactly sure how to formulate my question, please bare with me. My garden is on a rather steep slope that ends with a near vertical drop at the bottom of the garden.
I would like to plant an informal hedge along the bottom (just above the drop). My current best guess is to plant a row of Viburnum Tinus and just let it do its thing.
But I was wondering what would happen if I planted a yew hedge but only ever trimmed the top of it but not the sides (it would be impossible to cut the side facing the drop). Would it look like an informal hedge or would it just be a leggy mess?
Thank you!

1: How big is the drop?
2: Who owns the land or area below the drop?
3: What is your soil type?
4: Depending on the aspect too, which direction does it face?
5: Is it to hide a not so nice view or to stop you falling over the edge?
You might find after a few years of no trimming something like Yew although slow growing , might put long branches out and up that you cannot reach, so you might not be able to control the height from your side.
