Conifer dwarf
in Plants

I have this conifer in my garden..
can anyone identify it and tell me how and when to prune it? So it’s loose and layered.
Any help would be appreciated. Pics below:

I see 3 pots with labels in????
Your 2nd pic looks to be Juniperus...a prostrate juniper
it’s a ground growing not upright one…
They don't really need pruning unless they outgrow their site, in which case you can just take a branch out back to the main crown. They can spread to around four or five feet quite easily
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Over the years it's grown to about 1m high at the highest point and about 20ft wide. I prune it whenever it needs it to keep it fairly neat. It edges most of my 12ft x 8ft pond.
I think that is what you have.
It's fine to hack away at it as much as you want - it just carries on growing.
The only thing I wish I could do is reduce the height, but it's the top branches that have extended all the way around the pond.
BTW - I planted that to stop the heron from eating my fish - it worked

when is a better time to thin out some of the branches?
I kept pruning mine to try and keep it as low as possible so there are just 2 or 3 very long branches on either side. I just wanted it to edge the pond and stop the heron from getting too near.
I prune the lower limbs mostly, to keep the height down and prune the tops to prevent it building up more layers
There's also one in a front garden just down the road.
It's been left to its own devices for about 20 years and is now a huge tangled mass about 1m high and about 15ft in diameter - it's enormous.
