Daphnes in freezing weather

Currently in the Pacific Northwest we're having record low temperatures -- 20 degrees F. today.  My two young Daphnes were looking very healthy and growing well.  This morning their leaves are hugging close to the center of the plants.  How tolerant are Daphnes of cold temperatures?

I've grown D. mezereon  and D. Eternal Fragrance here and they have both survived -12C. I think we once got down to minus 15.C. but that is still above 0 Fahrenheit and I have no idea how they would cope with the temps you quote. I would put them somewhere a bit warmer and keep my fingers crossed !

I've never grown Daphnes, but I believe some varieties are less reliably hardy than others - you don't say which varieties you are growing.  It is also not just about the air temps. Exposure to wind, sun and drainage are factors as important as temperature. Daphnes do best in a better drained soil in a sheltered spot with at least a little sun.

If they're in pots I would move them to a sheltered spot and insulate them. If they're in the ground I'd invest in some horticultural fleece and wrap them up until the weather improves.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
  • If they're in the ground they should be fine; they're hardy to zone 5 and sometimes 4, which is the zone I'm in and we get temperatures like that every winter.
